A person suffering from drug addiction and alcoholic dependence will not be truly able to get help unless they admit to themselves that they have a problem. Family members, friends, doctors, etc. can suggest treatment but the patient needs to recognize that they need treatment for themselves to get well.
The first step to assess the type of care needed, is an assessment by an addiction professional at The Greenfield Center. At that point a recommendation will be made for inpatient or outpatient addiction treatment. Typically, a person who is in need of detoxification and stabilization will be referred to inpatient treatment. There all of their choices to use will be taken away. Once inpatient treatment is completed, it is always recommended for a continuum of care in an outpatient setting.
In many cases the person being assessed is appropriate for outpatient without having to go to inpatient treatment.
Comparing Outpatient and Inpatient Treatment Programs
There are similarities between Inpatient and Outpatient Treatment. Both employ group and individualized treatment. Medication management can be addressed in both settings. There is emphasis on the physical addiction and the mental obsession to use drugs and or alcohol. Typically, the drinking and drugging are but a symptom of something else that is going on with the patient.
In both settings, patients work on underlying issues that may have led to addiction in a non-judgmental environment and learn that they are not alone. Family history is very important as there is a genetic predisposition to addiction.
Outpatient Treatment Programs
Outpatient treatment allows the patient to continue with their lives without disruption. Programs and length of stay are determined by the addiction professional.
Inpatient Treatment Programs
Inpatient stays are necessary for some individuals and this will require removing themselves from their families, jobs, etc. while they are working on their recovery with no distractions.
Inpatient and outpatient treatment identifies triggers and develops new coping skills for the addict/alcoholic.
Evidence shows that an inpatient stay followed by outpatient treatment has better outcomes that just participating in an inpatient controlled environment. Outpatient treatment also encourages involvement in 12 step programs to further insure sustained recovery.
Inpatient treatment removes the patient from people, places, and things that contribute to their disease. Outpatient treatment helps the patient deal with life on life’s terms in the real world. After all that is where the use took place.
